Sierra Publishing Book - Life on the Victorian Railways by Nick Anchen (Hardcover 170pp)

The Victorian Railways of old was far more than just a transport business – it was a great railway family, where employees were treated as valued members of the organisation

Life on the Victorian Railways explores a bygone era, through the fascinating recollections and humorous stories of a selection of railwaymen, who performed roles such as Lad Labourer, Junior Clerk, Engine Cleaner, Steam Fitter, Train Guard, Passenger Train Conductor, Ticket Examiner, Station Master, Train Controller and District Superintendent

From the grimy North Melbourne Locomotive Depot to the glamorous Southern Aurora express train, dedicated railwaymen and women carried out their often unseen duties, and contributed to the day-to-day operations of the grand old ‘VR’ – that proud institution now consigned to the pages of history

Hardbound with 170 full-colour pages, Life on the Victorian Railways is complimented by over 100 magnificent B&W and colour photographs – most never before published – and is an absolute must for anyone interested in VR history

Sierra Publishing Book - Railways of The Ovens & King by Nick Anchen (Hardcover 148pp)

Nestled in the shadows of the Victorian Alps, the majestic Ovens and King River valleys first attracted prospectors during the 1850s gold rush. When the railway age arrived in the north east, iron roads were pushed through to the townships of Beechworth, Yackandandah, Bright and Whitfield. This book is the story of these fascinating railways, built to serve isolated settlements in the days of the horse and cart.

Hardbound with 148 pages of magnificent colour and B&W photos, this fantastic history is sure to become a classic for not only locals, but train buffs and historians in general.

Sierra Publishing Train Book - Enginemen of the Victorian Railways Vol.I (by Nick Anchen)

While the life of a locomotive engineman in the steam era may have appeared glamorous, the reality was often quite different. Long hours, poor conditions, relentless shiftwork and bad pay was the engine crew's lot, in an era when men relied on their workmates, and the Victorian Railways were still considered essential to the fortunes of the state. 'Enginemen of the Victorian Railways' provides a rare insight into life on the footplate, through the fascinating recollections of a selection of railwaymen, whose careers were as varied as the locomotives and lines they worked. From Mildura to Cudgewa, from the Spirit of Progress to Puffing Billy and from steam days to modern diesel locomotion, their stories paint a picture of life in a once-proud industry. In recent decades, the importance of railways has receded in the face of improved road transport and government apathy, and the branch lines, the trains and most of the men from this era have all but vanished, taking their stories with them. Memories and photographs are now all that remain of this fascinating era of the Victorian Railways.

Sierra Publishing Train Book - Puffing Billy - Spirit of the Dandenongs by Nick Anchen (Softcover 108pp)

The Puffing Billy Railway is a genuine living museum, part of the original Victorian Railways branch line which operated for fifty three years between Upper Ferntree Gully and Gembrook.

The quaint little train became an institution of the Dandenongs, and the closure of the line in 1954 caused a public outcry.

The salvation and continuing operation of Australia’s best-loved steam train is one of the great Australian stories.

Softbound with 108 full-colour pages, Puffing Billy – Spirit of the Dandenongs contains over 170 B&W and colour photographs.

First released in 2007, this third edition has been completely revised and updated, with a wealth of new material. An absolute must for anyone interested in VR history.

Branch lines of Victoria's North East.

The North East main line in Victoria conjures up memories of the mighty `S’ class Pacifics hauling the Spirit of Progress express passenger train on the broad gauge.

There were also a number of branch lines that fed the main line,most of which are sadly closed.

Lines such as that between Wodonga and Cudgewa, with its steep grades, tight curves and trestle bridges, or the Springhurst to Wahgunyah branch with it’s mixed train and not forgetting the picturesque Tallarook to Mansfield line.

In this DVD we will go back to the late 1950s and early 1960s when steam, and later diesel electric locomotives, were in charge of the many goods trains that worked on these lines.

The films, mainly shot by the late Keith Atkinson, and restored by Channel 5 Productions, show the lines in all their glory , but also signs of decline, where a few trucks constituted a train.

Highlights include:

Riding the Tallangatta to Cudgewa goods as far as Beetoomba, returning by special train hauled by J 516 from Cudgewa.
Films of the Wahgunyah mixed, hauled by D3 class locomotives.
Extensive footage of a `J’class hauled goods from Mansfield to Tallarook, plus various diesel hauled goods trains and rail motors

Channel 5 Productions DVD - Disappearing Steam - NSW Railways 1959 to the Mid 19
Channel 5 Productions DVD - Disappearing Steam - NSW Railways 1959 to the Mid 1960s (68 minutes)

As the 1950s progressed to the 1960s, wholesale changes in the railway scene in New South Wales were becoming noticeable, particularly on the main state lines.

As the disappearance of steam on the main line was well under way, it was only a matter of time before an increasing number of branch lines saw dieselisation, a prelude in a number of cases to line abandonment.

Thanks to cinematographers such as the late Keith Atkinson, who travelled extensively to record steam and railway operations in general through many parts of NSW from the late 1950s through to the mid 1960s, the vision of steam at work has been preserved.

Lines featured in this program include:

Australian Iron and Steel Company works railway at Port Kembla;
Corrimal Colliery;
Campbelltown to Camden line;
Cootamundra to Tumut and Batlow;
Wagga to Tumbarumba line;
Western region, featuring W44 concentrate train

The running time is approximately 70 minutes.

Channel 5 Productions DVD - Rail Motors Across Victoria 1950s-1960s (104 minutes)

The rail motor fleet of the Victorian Railways performed a vital role in providing the people of Victoria with a comprehensive rail service until the 1970s, when rationalisation of the system resulted in mass line closures and replacement of rail services by coaches on most branch line services.

Most of the lines filmed by Keith Atkinson, which appear in this program, are long gone. It is fortunate that Keith took the opportunity to record their part in, not only the Victorian Railways history, but that of Victoria itself. As such it makes this an important social document as well. It is also a tribute to the staff of the Victorian Railways of the era.

Lines featured:
Dandenong to Leongatha (filmed between 1958 and 1961).
Lilydale to Healesville (filmed circa 1960).
Fawkner to Somerton (filmed between September 1955 and May 1956).
Thomastown to Whittlesea (filmed between 1956 and 1959).
Clarkefield to Lancefield (filmed Sat 4th and 11th August 1956).
Murchison East to Rushworth (filmed December 1955).
Heathcote Junction to Heathcote (filmed between 1957 and 1962).
Tallarook to Alexandra (filmed 1st January 1957 and 1958).
Yea to Mansfield (Filmed circa 1964)
Castlemaine to Maryborough (filmed January 1957).
Maryborough to Ararat (filmed January to March 1957).

Of these films, that of the AEC Rail Motor, known affectionately as `The Beetle’ is prominently featured. This was filmed just prior to its ceasing operations in 1958.

Digitally restored and with appropriate audio, this program will transport you back in time when there were literally `Rail Motors Across Victoria’
